Susan Carland converted to Islam.
Flanjin journalist Martin is meeting with Susan Carland. Susan Carland
was born and raised in the area of Vermont that she still keeps in its memory, sweet memories of his childhood on this place. She said: "How pleasant it is to renew the same experience with my daughter, in fact, I took him to the river where my mother took me and where I had a great moments to feed the geese. "
Flanjin Martin said, saying:" Now we are near the house of Susan Carland who wears a denim skirt, a shirt with long sleeves and a blue veil, in contrast to what she was wearing it n 'Not so long ago. Susan has a great energy and a sense of humor, in fact, she hung photos of the most famous comedians, among them are those who have contributed to the formation of his personality . Nevertheless, she looks tired because his daughter, ten months, often wake during the night.
Susan's parents separated when she was seven years, and she went to live with her mother she describes as strong and sweet. She credits her mother a great influence on his life.
His mother was Catholic and strongly believes in the radical ideas of the faithful as John Shelby Spong. When Susan was a child, his parents were members of the United Church. Susan went to Sunday school, but she moved away from these courses to focus on songs and video clips from the age of twelve. Susan explains: "I believed in God, I always felt happy to know God."
When she had her fourteen, she joined a church that is characterized by a particular aspect. In fact, supporters of the church claim that God speaks to them during the night. For her, it's something rather odd or unacceptable, so she felt confused before this way of knowing God that surrounds everything. And so she headed to the concerns of adolescents who are characterized by dance parties, big parties and long rides, plus she no longer attended his classes in biology and English.
When she had her seventeen years, she has decided to mark the new year, study religions but Islam was not the first of its concerns as it seemed (or so she thought) that Islam was a violent religion, gender and strange. All she knew of Islam was a sentence in an encyclopedia for children and in film. In addition, her mother often said: "I prefer that you get married with a drug dealer rather than a Muslim."
Susan wonders if she does not know is that she has found Islam or whether it is Islam which has found. One day, watching television, she has found enthusiasm to see a show about Islam. Articles in newspapers and magazines have attracted his attention. Thus, in private, she began studying the religion and she found herself facing "a kindness and compassion that I never expected to find," Susan describes. As a doubt, Islam has appealed to her, it is a religion that does not separate between mind, body and soul as it does in Christianity.
When she decided to convert to Islam, she was armed with courage in order to prevent her friends and family and especially his mother, but now postponed each time. Fate intervened during one night when her mother told them she prepared pork chops for dinner. "My mother kissed me," she remembers, but she cried. A few days later, Susan has worn the veil.
Regarding the veil, Susan said that its importance is quite exaggerated, however, Islam affects every aspect of our lives. For me, the veil still remember that I am close to God. She added that the veil makes woman an ambassador of Islam.
She faced a lot of anger when she converted to Islam, some these old friends have moved away from her. But now, after five years, "I had my twenty four years, and I made new friends and non-Muslims and Muslims have a Muslim husband of Australian origin who works in the military barracks near Richmond. I have obtained university degrees in arts and sciences and I would become a sociologist. "
She believes her destiny in life is to fight and never give up. Her veil it attracts a lot of rude comments and more stares on the street. She thinks she will be wearing a shirt that will be printed the words: "If you keep looking at me, you'll get the answer you deserve. "At the same time, within the Muslim community, it merged with conflicts over the role of women.
Her honors thesis is on women's access to the mosque. "There was a gradual exclusion of female disciples in Islam. Originally, there were many, but it has disappeared. Islamic knowledge has become dominated by men from patriarchal cultures.
Sometimes she felt disappointed by some attitudes within the Muslim community on issues of gender or race. She believes that what she and number of increasingly important Islamic feminists around World argue, is the true Islam. "These are our rights, men may be angry against us as they seem to them good. What kind of man puts his safety on the subjugation of women?".
She is an active member of the Islamic community, it speaks for Islam in churches and schools, non-Muslim, it also contributes to assist refugees.
As it was announced that she won the title of "Muslim this year," a prize worth 2000 $ and it will have to distribute to charities of his choice, she agreed on two conditions: that it distribute this money in Australia and she would give to non-Muslims as well as Muslims.
Life by Susan Carland was often not stable, but as she says, she has become accustomed to never give up. She has never regretted the fact of having converted to Islam.
